I'm going to see Steve Martin speak at Princeton University tomorrow. He's speaking as part of the creative writing program.
I'm a big fan of this man. I'm not just a fan of the old 'wild and crazy guy' Steve (although i did love that)...and I'm a bit strange about my love of The Jerk (how can you the top the thermos love song for its original lyrics?), but I also loved the more obscure/less comedic things he did - David Mamet's The Spanish Prisoner and Grand Canyon. And when I discovered his writing? It's funny, warped, quirky, sweet, and sometimes sad. Yum. Nothing like a smart and funny man to weaken my knees.
Love him...that's all there is to it.
My friend (who is also my editor at the business/entertainment weekly where i freelance) knows how much I adore him, so she tried to snag me an interview for a preview story, but it didn't work out. But I got the next best thing - a reserved press seat in one of the first three rows at the talk - color me thrilled.
You found an audio link of the thermos song? The internet is soooo cool.

And "Bowfinger"...we own that one. The scene in the restaurant where he's talking on the car phone with the cord up his sleeve wearing his fake ponytail? That alone is worth the price. And "L.A. Story"...that's a classic. Okay, I'll stop now. :)

Oh, fabulous, can't wait to hear all about it. I've never read his books, but have heard wonderful praise of his writing from those who have. Curious to see what the "Shopgirl" film will be like. And he WAS good in "Grand Canyon," wasn't he? I really enjoyed that film--think it's quite underrated. We just caught part of "Leap of Faith" on TV the other weekend--I'd forgotten about that one. And "The Jerk"? It's in our Netflix queue. :)
